Made in 1900 for Varvara Kelkh,
the Soviet mining and railroad heiress,
this is one of seven Eggs that The House of
Fabergé made
for her. It is an exact reproduction in miniature.
The Egg is enamel guilloché with overlapping
discs covering the entire surface, hence the
name Pine Cone Egg. Each panel is rimmed with
Austrian crystals. Inside the Egg, a minute
elephant with its mahout astride holding
his prod and sitting on an elaborate howdah
of strawberry red enamel which is set with
an Austrian crystal. The Egg sits on a stand
of Siberian Jade and has an attached bale for
wearing. All metal decor is gold plated sterling
silver.
