Boxes: Fabergé made dozens of boxes of every description and for varied purposes. Cigar boxes for tables, cigarette boxes to be carried, compacts, visiting card cases,and many for no purpose other than to be enjoyed as presentation boxes from the Czar by whomever he was gifting. All were exquisite and flawlessly made of gold or silver, sometimes of malachite, rock crystal or tortoise shell, mother of pearl or semi precious materials. The "beautiful and perfect enclosure of space" was their raison d'etre.
